How long does damp proofing take?

In short: The treatment itself is usually the quickest part; the time goes on replastering and on letting the wall dry, and a solid wall that has been damp for years can take several months to dry out fully. You don't need to wait that long to use the room, but there are limits on how soon you can decorate.

Survey and report

The survey is a single visit. For pre-purchase surveys, the written report is with you within 3 days. For landlords, we aim to inspect within 5 days of your request. Once you have the report and quote, we agree a start date with you.

Treatment and replastering

How long the work takes on site depends on the cause and how much wall is involved. For rising damp, the plaster is hacked off, the new damp-proof course is injected and the wall is replastered with a salt-resistant plaster, then skimmed. Penetrating damp repairs depend on the repair and the weather. We give you a timescale for your job with the quote.

Drying the plaster

Fresh plaster typically needs at least a week to dry per coat before painting. The biggest factor is the room itself: the warmer it is, the faster plaster and walls dry, so a heated room in summer dries much quicker than a cold one in winter. Ventilation and the number of coats matter too. Keep the room heated and ventilated to help it along.

Drying the wall

A solid wall that has been damp for years takes far longer to dry out fully than the plaster on its surface: often several months, depending on its thickness, the time of year and how well the room is heated and ventilated. That is normal, and it is why the decorating advice below matters.

Decorating

Once the new plaster has dried you can decorate with a breathable, water-based emulsion. Hold off on vinyl wallpaper, oil-based paints and heavy furniture tight against the wall until the wall has fully dried, so the remaining moisture can escape. We will give you specific advice for your job.

Frequently asked questions

How long does damp proofing take: FAQs.

Can I stay in the house during damp proofing?

Usually, yes. We work room by room, protect floors and belongings, and keep the rest of the house usable.

Why do the walls still look damp after treatment?

Surface staining and some moisture can remain while the wall dries out. If damp is still spreading after the drying period, get in touch so we can check it under the guarantee.

Can I put wallpaper up straight away?

Not vinyl or heavy papers. Use a breathable emulsion until the wall behind has fully dried.
