Moisture trapped by modern materials
Cement pointing and render, gypsum plaster and plastic paints on walls built to breathe. The fix is often to remove them and repair in lime.
Damp proofing in Beverley
Beverley’s older houses need a careful approach to damp: solid walls, lime mortar and plaster, conservation areas and listed buildings. We survey first and recommend treatments that suit the building, not just the damp.
Backed by guarantees of up to 30 years.
Local housing
Beverley is a historic market town, and its centre, around the Minster, Saturday Market and the streets leading out to the Westwood, is made up largely of Georgian and Victorian houses. Much of the town centre is a conservation area, and many buildings are listed.
Older houses like these were usually built with solid walls, lime mortar and lime plaster, which let moisture in and out. Many have since had cement pointing, cement render or gypsum plaster added, and non-breathable paints. Those trap moisture in the wall, and the damp they cause is often mistaken for rising damp.
Beverley also has plenty of twentieth-century housing, from inter-war semis to newer estates on the edges of the town, where condensation and penetrating damp are the more usual problems.
If your house is listed, work that affects its character usually needs listed building consent from East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and some damp treatments may not be suitable. We’ll flag this in the survey report. Check with the council before any work starts.
What we find
Cement pointing and render, gypsum plaster and plastic paints on walls built to breathe. The fix is often to remove them and repair in lime.
Worn pointing, leaking gutters and downpipes, and defective sills on older brickwork.
In newer homes and in older ones where windows have been sealed up.
Diagnosed carefully: chemical damp-proof courses are not always appropriate in historic walls.
How it works

Damp proofing work is backed by written guarantees of up to 30 years, depending on the treatment. Guarantee terms.

Frequently asked questions
We can survey it and recommend work that suits the building, but works affecting a listed building's character usually need listed building consent from East Riding of Yorkshire Council. Some standard treatments are not appropriate for historic walls.
If an old solid wall built with lime mortar has been repointed in hard cement mortar, moisture can be trapped in the bricks. A survey will show whether that is the cause.
